28 May Fred Hirst Off To A Flyer
[ball in flight….the first approach shot to the 1st of this years 2021 Fred Hirst saw Earnie play his last. Vesty wins 4&3]
Last year’s Fred Hirst brought some of the best competition to TGC. This year we are off to a flyer again and it promises to be more of the same. To many a moan, groan and ‘ahhh’ as the names were pulled from the hat the ensuing battles began with a bang…
Convinced it’s always a set up and trying to add a shot off his handicap with a new set of clubs every time is Vice Rabbits Captain Craig Vesty. So when he parked his second shot to 4ft on the 1st with a 7 iron from an old set of Dunlops he found in cupboard it was turn up for the plus fours when he put Lee Earnshaw out at the first stage. A 4 & 3 win versus one of last year’s best players sees Vesty progress in Quarter 4 and will now meet Sean McLernon. In this titan of a group Matt Saxon ground out a typical victory on the last versus Bayram Pallavus giving 8 shots to boot. Ryan Gaffney also falls at the feat of Reece Gill. He will play the winner of the intriguing dual between Jonny Rob and Matt Edwards.
Quarter 3 is yet to take off but current champ Dan Fielden take to the stage and exits in the right direction with a 3&2 win over Isaac Davey Day with Jon Turner overcoming a valiant effort by Al Stobbs (4&3) to set up a clash with Chris Thornsby.
Our Captain managed a last hole victory versus Stu Jackson in Quarter 1. He will take on Heath Kennedy in the first round. The winner of those will face Andy Wade whose 3&2 victory over Stu Priestley saw him first into the second round of 32. The unfortunate Mark Wallis had to give up his game to John Barker after a fight with a man hole. Fortunately, his Srixon Super Softs are in place to fight another day. John Barker now faces the in-form Marcus Calvert.
Last but not least we have Quarter 2. With last year’s finalist Bobby Fielden in amongst the pigeons it took an eagled eyed performance by Rob Ogden to dismiss him 2&1 after Bobby’s win over Geoff Whitworth 2up. Bobby O beats Bobby F but Barry M found John Whitham too tough going down 4&3. Marshy Marshall couldn’t repeat last year’s incredible comeback and loses out to Woz Duckworth 3&2. He faces The Moroccan Caddy in round 1 proper.
