The Club Championship

Rob Watkins pulled off his second major of the season after winning the Club Championship. Playing 36 holes in the same day, it was a tough ask to stay the course but gross scores of 76 and 73 finally overcome the challenge from Marcus Calvert.

The field was one of the most open in recent times and with Chris Thornsby missing the title could have gone to a number of players. By the end of the first 18 holes only four went sub 80 gross. Rob Watkins (76) was closely followed by Alan Platten (77), Andrew Lupton (78) and Marcus Calvert (78). Alan Platten’s score was heading for the gross lead until double bogeys on 17 & 18. Andrew Lupton was building some early momentum going just +3 gross after 12 until a 7 on the 13th. Around that mark Marcus was very steady until a couple of double bogeys appeared on the card through 13 & 14. So with a birdie on 18th Rob Watkins took the outright lead. As with the JHJ Barker win Rob managed to hold out with a 76 in the subsequent 18 holes to win by 9 shots from Marcus.
