The 1st & 10th

"A perfect opening hole that snakes away below the gaze of Stoodley Pike. Stroke index 15 & 16 belies the nature of the hole. The trap of the culvert crossed via Snooky's bridge plays on the mind of the big hitter. A well placed iron to a plateau offers a perfect line in. The wide green tempts in the second but the road around the back of the green makes it tight"

The 2nd & 11th

A wide, inviting fairway lined by colourful summer azaleas provides a gentle incline into the round with a seemingly fine opportunity for a good score. Yet it is more deceptive than first appears. Success depends on the correct 2nd club selection to a tight green flanked by bunkers.

A beautifully subtle dog leg up hill. An accurate drive is required especially for the long hitter where fortune doesn't always favour the brave. A mound, rough on the left and bunkers provide the traps before the second into a blind green. Amazing views await what is a tricky hole to par.

The 4th & 13th

Playing almost as a par 5 and over a blind summit into a huge dog leg right sees the SI of 1 rightfully awarded. A good, long drive still sees the pin still sunk behind an undulating fairway. A short drive and there is still plenty to do. Whichever the approach play is flanked by beautiful views of the Pennines.

SI 1 & 2

The 5th & 14th

One of the largest greens yet demands more than most in accuracy. A simple looking hole on the card sees many a tee shot short with deft handed wedge play needed to recover. Flanked by sand the blind green always needs careful thought on club selection. Being on the high point of the course wind tends to be a factor. Not a straight forward par three.

The 6th & 15th

Long and straight this hole has everything for every golfer. From the inviting vista on the tee undulations, traps and sand usher you down the course and await the wayward drive. The big hitter will eye threading the mounds, others will plot their way. Both will meet at a green which affords amazing panoramic views of the Pennines. Many a members favourite hole.

SI 5 & 6

The 7th

Arguably TGC's defining hole. As you step up high onto Rive Rocks the town can be seen way, way below psychologically stretching the hole down and away farther into the beautiful Yorkshire countryside. Both tantalising and terrifying this par three is long and offers little relief other than a pin point strike. A raised fairway on the left, a sunken one to the right and a bunker front left lay in wait. A windy day in competition this hole could make or break a round.

The 16th

A simply beautiful hole. Teeing off high from Rive Rocks this stunning view to a stunning green is seemingly a simple straight, high shot. Yet with rough left, a fairway that falls away right and three bunkers it is still ready for the errant iron. Wind will play a big part of club selection if present. Any of high irons, hybrids to the wedge may be called for.

The 8th & 17th

A glorious approach rewards a good fairway position on the 2nd hardest hole. A blind drive over the marker still leaves plenty to do on this long dog leg par four. The green is guarded by a bunker at its front, water to the right. The undulating dip before that enjoys kicking short irons right to the imminent danger of the water. With trees populating the right side, too, going short right off the tee and it's all three hazards to cross.

Evening at the 9th and 18th hole at Todmorden Golf Course

The 9th & 18th

The finale of the course is amplified, literally, by the echoes from the two tiered walled green. A green perfectly place for clinching a victory. A nervous iron in to secure the correct level would be preceded by a drive required to split trees that line either side of the fairway. The 9th tee presents a beautiful drive over water. The course offers little change for the slice but this hole is more forgiving from the 18th tee.
